Overtown Youth Center & Elandis Mentorship: Year One
Miami, July 5, 2018 – Through Libra’s Mentorship Program (LMP), Libra professionals have the chance to serve as role models for young people, first generation college students and students who face socio-economic challenges. Most recently, this opportunity was given to employees from Elandis, a Libra Group company focused on real estate investment, development and management globally. Based in Miami, FL, Elandis partnered with Overtown Youth Center (OYC) to help their high school students explore career pathways and to prepare them for future jobs and internships. OYC is a youth development agency providing educational and enrichment programming which promotes the academic, social, emotional and physical development of children.
As the facilitator of the program, LMP led a year-long collaboration between Elandis and OYC from fall 2017 to summer 2018. Participants included five mentors from Elandis and eight freshmen mentees from the OYC. The Elandis team met monthly with their mentees and each session focused on a different theme related to college and career preparedness. Topics included interview skills, business etiquette and public speaking. In addition to these professional development discussions, interactive social activities with the students were planned such as visits to the Elandis office and a bowling outing. Through these meetings, the program provided the mentees with tangible career advice as well as an outlet to address their personal struggles and achievements.
“The mentorship program that OYC has started for us helps us establish the basic fundamentals of hard work through mentorship. It’s helping me plan for my future to become a video programmer/designer. My mentor continues to encourage me to look into coding and programming programs for experience in programming. My mentor has exposed me to the real estate, which will become a second option for me. I would like to thank my mentor and OYC for choosing me to be a part of this amazing mentorship program.” – Amari M., Mentee, Overtown Youth Center
“I’m enjoying how my mentor takes time out of their busy schedules to meet with me every month. I’ve learned so much about their professional roles, which interest me a lot. Each month my mentor provides me words of wisdom and assists me with future goals. This mentorship will assist me in becoming a businessman and leader.” – Lamari M., Mentee, Overtown Youth Center
Throughout the course of the program, mentees gained more confidence in themselves and acquired a skillset to prepare them for any professional path. Due to its positive outcomes in year one, the mentorship program will continue for a second year under the guidance of LMP. The Elandis team looks forward to participating in the program once again and seeing even more growth in their mentees as sophomores.
