Highlights from Concordia Americas Summit
August 18, 2022 – The sixth Concordia Americas Summit took place in Miami in July in partnership with the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS). Continuing its legacy of gathering leaders from across industries, sectors, and geographies to confront the challenges and opportunities facing the Western Hemisphere, the summit hosted dozens of speakers and panelists covering a wide range of topics, from the ongoing impact of the pandemic and the mental health crisis to the emerging threats to democracy in the region and the critical need to transition to Net Zero. Libra Group is a founding sponsor of Concordia and was honored to attend the Americas Summit and host a roundtable discussion, “Transformation and Development: How symbiosis in private and public partnerships can shape LATAM’s renewable energy future.”
Speakers at the summit – including Dr. Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General; H.E. Luis Amagro, Secretary General of the OAS; General Laura J. Richardson, U.S. Southern Command; and Carmen Correa, CEO of Pro Mujer; and many others – stressed the need for enhanced public-private partnerships to address critical social, economic and environmental issues that not only face Latin America but also interconnect the countries of the Western Hemisphere. One of the most impassioned talks came from former President of Colombia Ivan Duque, who spoke at Concordia just days after a historic presidential election. President Duque was honored as a recipient of Concordia’s Leadership Award in the public sector and spoke of the vital importance of democracy and bipartisanship and his gratitude to his cabinet members and members of his community who have fought to defend democracy. A full recording of his acceptance speech can be found here.
The panel on Advancing Environmental Sustainability and Clean Energy Across the Western Hemisphere was moderated by the Vice Chancellor for Innovation of the University of Miami, Norma Kenyon, and included participation from Guido Patrignani, the CEO of Greenwood Energy, a Libra Group subsidiary; María Eugenia Brizuela, the Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of El Salvador; Ana Irene Delgado the Deputy of the National Assembly of the Republic of Panama; and Renaud De Viel Caste, the Director of Operations of Rubicon. Guido spoke about the TERRA initiative, an innovative program which has just recently launched in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia to provide indigenous communities with access to affordable and sustainable energy sources. The TERRA initiative models a way to advance technology and sustainable communities without destroying traditions and cultures.
